Helping Hand House was founded in 1984 by Margie Addington, a Puyallup, Washington woman who responded to a challenge from her pastor to do something to help homeless families. Her passion led her to gather members of her church and share her vision to provide temporary homes. Initially, church members pooled their resources to rent a couple of houses for temporary emergency shelters. Since then, Helping Hand House has steadily grown. In 1997, Margie Addington passed the torch to Nola Renz as executive director. Deeply committed to the original vision, she led the effort to add housing units, expand the communities we serve, add programs, increase staff, and raise awareness in the community.

Through generous support from the local community, individual donors, civic groups and churches, and foundations, we have been able to make a number of positive steps toward solving family homelessness in Pierce County. Currently, we have three programs, forty-one housing units, ten staff members, and one AmeriCorps volunteer. Thus far, we have helped over 800 families, over 2,500 individuals (65% children) to lead lives they never could have imagined.

Here at Helping Hand House, we are proud of our long history, our model programs, and our organization's and our clients' accomplishments. We are also excited about the future. We will continue to expand our ability to prevent and end homelessness in our community.
